The research group “Chemistry in Aerosols, the Atmosphere, and Aqueous Solutions” (CIA3) invites applications for a doctoral position in BlueMat’s Research Area B (Fluid Transport Materials). The research project will focus on the controlled condensation and evaporation of water at nanoparticle interfaces for applications such as artificial rain, in-situ water harvesting, and targeted inhalation therapies.

About your role:

Production and chemical and morphological characterization of artificial nano-particles
Quantification of water uptake potential using a range of spectroscopic and imaging techniques
Mapping water interactions to nano-particle characteristics
Estimating the potential for water harvesting and inhalation drug delivery
Collaborate closely with BlueMat partners
Share your findings through publications and engage with the research community and public

About you:

Completed scientific university studies (Master's) in physics, chemistry, or materials/nano/aerosol science
Experience with aerosol generation
Experience with synchrotron radiation and X-ray spectroscopy and imaging
Experience with surface, aerosol, or nanoparticle characterization
Experience with complementary theoretical and/or computational methods, such as hygroscopic modeling, molecular dynamics, and AI/ML, would be an advantage
Curiosity and ability to work independently
Teamwork skills for working in interdisciplinary teams
Very good English required (minimum B2)

A Master’s degree (or equivalent, 300 ECTS) in Electronics or a related discipline.
5+ years of experience in electronics engineering, ideally with hands-on electronic boards design. Candidates with less experience may be considered if they have relevant expertise.
Solid background in digital and analog electronics, including circuit design, schematics, and PCB layout.
Good IT proficiency; programming (Python, C) and FPGA design are assets.

Key responsibilities of the Executive Secretary

The Executive Secretary, based in Copenhagen, heads the Secretariat of approximately 35 staff, and is responsible to the Governing Board for developing and implementing GBIF’s strategic plans, operating the infrastructure, serving users and fostering partnerships. The Executive Secretary is overall responsible for financial stability and a thriving organization, and reports to the Chair of the Board.

Remuneration and conditions of contract

Job Duties

Support identification, integration, and preparation of large clinical, imaging, and longitudinal research datasets generated across interdepartmental partners.

Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns within high volume, multifaceted datasets relevant to maternal-fetal research.

The Power Supplies Group (PSG) plays a central role in the performance of the ESRF accelerator complex. It oversees the entire lifecycle—design, construction, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance—of more than 2,000 power converters supplying the EBS magnets, as well as the High Quality Power Supply (HQPS) protection system that safeguards the whole accelerator.

Your mission

As a Power Electronics Engineer within PSG, you will take an active role in enhancing the performance and reliability of the power supplies that drive the accelerator’s electromagnets. You will also contribute to the smooth day-to-day operation by supporting maintenance and troubleshooting activities.

Working hand-in-hand with the Group Head, you will help steer upgrade programs and continuous improvement initiatives across all PSG equipment.

What you’ll be working on

Lead the evaluation and modernization of ramped power supplies (4 Hz), handling up to 1,500 V / 1,500 A for the ESRF injector, with a focus on boosting performance, robustness, and tackling obsolescence
Contribute to the development and deployment of the COLD (Cold Copper Operation Linac Demonstrator) project
Drive reliability improvements by identifying root causes of failures and implementing hardware and/or software design enhancements
Ensure operation, maintenance, and long-term performance of PSG systems
Support accelerator operations, including participation in periodic on-call duty

Expected profile

Education

Technical expertise

At least two years of relevant professional experience in power electronics or a similar domain.
You bring strong knowledge in power electronics, electromagnetic fields, high-power semiconductor devices, and ramped power systems. You are comfortable working with AC/DC and DC/DC converters, including those used in accelerator environments.
You have hands-on experience in modelling electrical circuits and simulating power converters using tools such as PLECS and MATLAB Simulink.

Additional strengths include:

Familiarity with version control tools like Git

The ESRF’s Radio Frequency (RF) group designs, operates, and maintains instrumentation essential for increasing and stabilizing electron energy in the accelerator complex. To enhance the performance of the storage ring, the group is developing a digital Low-Level RF (dLLRF) system, featuring a fast RF feedback system to control both existing accelerating cavities and new harmonic cavities. In this context, we are looking to strengthen our team with a Digital Electronics Engineer.

Main Missions

FPGA & Digital Electronics Development: Lead the construction and validation of the new dLLRF system based on Micro Telecommunication Computing Architecture (MicroTCA).
System Adaptation: Adapt the dLLRF system developed at SOLEIL Synchrotron to meet ESRF’s requirements, as part of a collaborative agreement.
Data Logger Development: Design and implement a fast data logger for post-mortem analysis of RF signals.

Key Responsibilities

Finalize and validate architectural choices for the new dLLRF system.
Develop the application framework (FPGA firmware), including optical communication links between modules to configure the fast-digital RF feedback system.
Study, compare, implement and test digital regulation algorithms for the project.
