[Autre] NOMIS-ISTA Fellowship Program à IST Austria

The NOMIS-ISTA Fellowship Program offers excellent postdoctoral researchers the freedom to work on questions at the intersection of two or more scientific disciplines in a unique research environment, while also providing the security of outstanding scientific mentorship from proven leaders in their respective fields. A cross-discipline project proposal, to be co-supervised by two group leaders from different disciplines, identifies projects and fellows who demonstrate great flexibility, creativity and collaboration.

All research fields supported at ISTA will be eligible (see https://ista.ac.at/en/research). Should the specific interdisciplinary expertise required for the research project not be available at ISTA, an external secondary supervisor can be proposed. This external supervisor can host the fellow (secondment) for up to three months per fellowship year.

NOMIS and ISTA award two NOMIS Fellowships annually, following a two-stage application process (including interview).

Eligibility Requirements

At the time of recruitment (i.e. within 8 months of the application deadline), applicants must have been awarded their PhD and preferably have acquired their first postdoctoral experience and/or interdisciplinary training. However, the NOMIS Fellowship Selection Panel will also consider exceptionally promising candidates who fall outside the above criteria.
Applicants must have an existing affiliation to an academic/research institution (note: internal applicants must not have been employed at ISTA before January 1, 2026.
Following the initial evaluation round, top-ranked candidates must be available for a remote interview between November 1, 2026 and November 21, 2026.
If successful, the NOMIS Fellowship must commence within six months of notification.

Research Work

Scientific Context

Water leakage in urban underground pipelines can not only bring economic loss due to the wastage, but also can lead to structural damages of roads and buildings, which brings severe problems in the city infrastructure management. Addressing these issues requires efficient detection to minimize the impact on public safety. There are several methods for detecting water leaks, such as pressure/flow sensors or fiber optics, but they require sensors to be installed in advance. To complete the existing techniques, in this study, we will explore the application of ground penetrating radar (GPR) to detect underground water leakage, because GPR is non-destructive and high-efficient way.

Thesis Objective

This thesis aims to detect water leakages without the need for excavation based on radar methods. The physical basis of radar depends on the dielectric contrast between dry and wet soil around the pipes. This contrast appears as an anomaly in the radargram, providing an indication of the potential leak location.

Based on the previous research works, Leak-scan proposes to use 3D GPR data to optimize the detection process powered by AI techniques. Its objectives contain (1) inverse the time-domain data into spatial domain based on full wave inversion (FWI); (2) combine the simulated data with experimental data to build hybrid dataset, (3) use learning-based methods to detect the GPR images with and without leakage.

Concretely, this doctoral project will aim to design a comprehensive GPR detection solution. Indeed, to implement this technique with high precision and obtain a real-time view of the soil condition, certain scientific hurdles remain to be overcome. The challenge lies in identifying water leaks with the consideration of the nature of soils, the multi-layered structure in the urban trench construction, the volume of leaked water, and the pipe dimensions, etc. Meanwhile, the AI modeling of wave propagation in the ground will be applied in the interpretation of data. This process is supported by a federated learning infrastructure that combines data from multiple sources to build a global perspective. The entire framework leverages an edge-cloud infrastructure to ensure real-time responsiveness.

The data used in this thesis will be a hybrid one: the combination of the collected experimental data from the Project Radir and the simulated data from gprMax.

Thesis Work Planning

The provisional work plan is detailed as follows :

— Enrollment in Doctoral School 432 (ED SMI 432 - SCIENCES DES MÉTIERS DE L'INGÉNIEUR), state of the art review, and definition of a research methodology.

— Modeling the behavior of electromagnetic waves in unsaturated soil, paper submission.

— Development of a reliable and efficient PINNs-FWI model for the detection and characterization of water leaks. Paper submission

— Proposal of innovative methods for optimizing AI models and distributed computing, and paper submission

— Evaluation of field strategies for the experiments obtained by Project Radir, article submission

— Dissertation manuscript written, presentation of results, defense.

Expected Scientific/Technical Output

● The research results are expected to be published in top-tier international conferences and journals.

● The thesis will lead to the development of a complete GPR solution for pipeline leak detection

Discrete generative modeling is essential for learning complex distributions over structured data
such as text, graphs, and biological sequences. Developing and understanding models for dis-
crete spaces is therefore a key challenge in modern machine learning, with broad implications
for both theory and applications.
The PhD project focuses on the theoretical foundations and algorithmic design of discrete gener-
ative models, situated at the intersection of stochastic processes, probability theory, and machine
learning.
The PhD candidate will investigate continuous-time Markov chains (CTMCs) and jump-diffusion
processes for generative tasks. A core objective is to overcome the “factorization trap” present
in current discrete flow matching models by exploring alternative combinatorial and geometric
structures on the space of probability measures. This will require investigating combinatorial
and geometric structures on probability spaces that go beyond classical Wasserstein geometry.
The candidate will work both on the theoretical aspects and on the implementation of novel
architectures, including hybrid jump-diffusion flows in token embedding spaces.

Les systèmes de défense ont généralement une durée de vie très longue, souvent de 30 à 40 ans, et doivent rester performants dans un contexte d’évolution technologique rapide et d’émergence de nouvelles menaces. Dans ce cadre, les architectures traditionnelles présentent plusieurs limites : cycles de développement longs, obsolescence précoce, faible flexibilité face aux évolutions opérationnelles et coûts de modernisation élevés.

Le projet de thèse MOSA-VariaMos, premier projet du programme AMEIDA, vise à proposer un cadre d’ingénierie permettant de concevoir, formaliser et valider des architectures de défense modulaires, dont l’évolution est explicitement pilotée par une modélisation systématique de la variabilité multi-dimensionnelle (opérationnelle, architecturale, technologique et temporelle).

Le projet s’appuie sur le paradigme MOSA (Modular Open Systems Approach), centré sur les interfaces ouvertes et les modules remplaçables, tout en répondant à un enjeu clé : la modularité seule ne suffit pas sans une gestion explicite de la variabilité.

La contribution scientifique principale portera sur une approche de gestion de la variabilité centrée sur l’architecture (implémentée sur la plateforme VariaMos), combinée à des techniques d’intelligence artificielle (raisonnement automatisé, optimisation) permettant d’analyser, simuler, valider, recommander et planifier l’évolution d’architectures dans de larges espaces de configuration.

L’approche sera validée à travers des cas d’usage représentatifs du domaine de la défense et des démonstrateurs technologiques, avec des mesures quantitatives de passage à l’échelle et des retours industriels.

A Different Path to Scientific Independence

Many of the most transformative discoveries in biology were made by scientists at an early stage of their careers, when they were free to pursue bold ideas and challenge established paradigms. Yet in today's biomedical research ecosystem, the path to independence has become increasingly prolonged. Talented young scientists often spend many years in postdoctoral positions before having the opportunity to establish their own research programs.

NIBS believes that exceptional scientists should have the opportunity to pursue independence earlier.

The Independent Investigator Fellowship Program was established to accelerate the transition from doctoral training to scientific leadership. Rather than serving as another postdoctoral position, this program provides outstanding young scientists with the resources, mentorship, and intellectual freedom necessary to develop their own research vision and establish an independent scientific identity.

Our goal is to identify future leaders in biomedical research and provide them with the opportunity to begin leading independent research programs at an earlier stage of their careers.

Eligibility

Applicants should have received their Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree within the past three years and should demonstrate exceptional scientific achievement, creativity, and potential for independent research leadership.

Fellowship Support

Successful fellows will receive:

Context

Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) has become essential to managing the lifecycle of machine learning (ML) models, enabling continuous delivery, automation, and reproducibility. However, the rapid adoption of MLOps has advanced more quickly than the integration of robust security practices. Traditional software security practices—such as static analysis, dynamic scans, and vulnerability assessments—are well established, but ML pipelines present additional unique security concerns [1] [2]. For instance, ML systems face risks like adversarial attacks, model poisoning, training data compromise, drift, and injection attacks [3]. Additionally, privacy and compliance challenges—such as protecting personally identifiable information (PII) during data ingestion and model training—introduce further complexity that traditional security methods often overlook [4]. This suggests that machine learning models require security controls tailored to their lifecycle, from data collection to training, deployment, and monitoring. Current MLOps practices lack comprehensive built-in security mechanisms tailored to ML-specific risks and are fragmented: they either target specific threats, lack end-to-end traceability across the pipeline, or introduce prohibitive overhead that undermines the agility promised by MLOps. This has given rise to the emerging field of DevSecMLOps, which aims to extend the principles of DevSecOps [5, 6] to machine learning systems, ensuring both agility and security in AI-based applications.

The core problem is therefore the absence of a unified, systematic, and pipeline-wide approach to integrate security-by-design into MLOps pipelines. We lack frameworks that can:

Embed security requirements explicitly into ML workflows from the start,

Continuously enforce and monitor these requirements across all pipeline stages, and

Adapt to evolving threats without slowing down the pace of deployment.

Without such an approach, organizations risk deploying AI systems that are performant but fragile, exposing them to critical security and privacy breaches.

Objectives

The PhD will investigate the foundations and practical mechanisms of DevSecMLOps. The specifics of security in MLOps will mainly concern privacy. Users of ML-based solutions are legitimately concerned about the future of their data (e.g., where it is stored and who has access to it), and data anonymization is a key concern. The other facet of security (e.g., who is responsible in the event of a security problem?, how to ensure that ML models are robust against attacks and cannot be used maliciously) will also have to be taken into account. The research will focus on embedding security requirements directly into ML workflows, ensuring that threats such as data poisoning, adversarial manipulation, and privacy leakage are anticipated and mitigated early. It will also explore AI-driven automation to support continuous security checks, balancing the rigour of security with the agility of continuous delivery. The expected result is a methodological and technical framework that operationalizes security for ML pipelines, enabling organizations to deploy AI systems that are both performant and trustworthy.

Mission

The PhD candidate will conduct a comprehensive study of vulnerabilities across ML lifecycles, identify the security issues associated with current MLOPs practices, and analyze how existing DevSecOps principles can be extended to MLOps. The candidate will design security-by-design mechanisms tailored to ML workflows, from data ingestion and preprocessing to model training and deployment. These mechanisms should be developed, while acknowledging that those systems evolve rapidly. The candidate will also explore the use of machine learning for automating security checks, generating adversarial tests, and detecting pipeline anomalies. Finally, the proposed solutions will be validated through industrial case studies (from Softeam Group), demonstrating their effectiveness in mitigating threats while maintaining reproducibility and delivery speed.
